The silliness of a melodrama and the serious issues facing teens today.
The Hastings Junior Community Theatre is covering both with its student-directed one-act
plays, the first in a series of summer events for HJCT.
Christine Cottam. HJCT chairwoman, is coordinating both one-acts. Tony Wheeler, a
Harvard senior, was chosen to direct “Higher,” while Grace Callahan of Hastings was named
director of the melodrama, “Illinois Jane and the Pyramid of Peril.” Actors come from Hastings
and surrounding communities.
“Illinois Jane,” a spoof of Indiana Jones, is a classic melodrama, Cottam said. Audience
members will be able to “boo” the villian, Pierre LaMalodeur, and cheer the hero, Illinois Jane.
The melodrama will be fun for the entire family, Cottam said. “Higher” is a more serious play,
written especially for HJCT by New York University student and playwright Anthony Andrews.
“Teenagers today face a myriad of issues, from pregnancy to acceptance by peers,”
Cottam said. “Anthony has touched on many of these in a way that will make the audience
think about the actions of the characters and the consequences on their lives.”
Andrews, formerly of Superior, has been on hand during rehearsals and is molding and
shaping his script to fit the actors and their interpretations of the characters.
Both one-acts will be performed at 7 p.m. June 4 & 5 at the Hastings Community
Theatre, located at Good Samaritan Village. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for
students.
