Lochland Country Club has been a part of the Hastings community and economy since 1961. In its peak season, Lochland staffs over 70 employees from Hastings and its surrounding areas. Lochland Country Club is member owned and offers recreational activities including fine and casual dining, tennis, golf, swimming and special event catering. Non-member events and golf outings welcome.
In the late 1950's Jim McDonald, owner of a multi-state chain of department stores, had a vision to create the finest private golf and country club between Omaha and Denver. Almost 45 years later, Jim's vision is thriving.
With a personal investment of more than $500,000, he purchased the old Hohlen farm and built what is now known as Lochland Country Club. The unique name of the Club was suggested to him by a friend in honor of Jim's strong Scottish roots and because Jim had built two beautiful lakes on the property.
More than 250 people signed on as charter members when ground was broken in spring of 1960. By December of 1961 the clubhouse was finished and, not surprisingly, appointed with true Scottish décor.
The course was designed by noted Chicago golf course architect, David Gill. McDonald brought in the legendary golf pro and teacher, Harry Obitz, as the Club's golf advisor and soon the original nine holes opened in 1962 with the second nine complete by 1965.
On February 1, 1967 McDonald sold the Club to its membership for a mere $150,000 and Lochland Country Club was now a member owned club with Jerry Whelan (soon to be Nebraska's Lieutenant Governor) as its first President.
Lochland continued to develop over the years and created a reputation as the premiere golf and country club in out-state Nebraska. The success of the Club can only be attributed to the loyalty and commitment of its members.
That loyalty and commitment was demonstrated once again after June 23, 2000 when the original clubhouse was devastated by a massive fire. A stunning new facility was created that truly complemented the spectacular golf course. Lochland's membership rose out of those ashes and proudly claims the finest private golf and country club between Omaha and Denver.
The membership will always be grateful to the foresight and imagination of Jim McDonald and those who came after him.
